So putting all the hype aside about what’s the best, lets just look at the facts.

LED VS LCD TV Review

LED VS LCD TVs are painfully pricey, but the cutting-edge technology they offer is enough to lure in interested TV enthusiasts who often debate between LED VS LCD features. Although many leading manufacturers have come out with particular models, two brands stand out, pitting their products against each other in the most noticeable ways—Samsung’s A950 LED LCD, and Sony’s XBR8 Series.

Let’s take a closer look at how both brands justify their claim to being the best LED TV out there LED VS LCD.

LED TVs are basically LCD flat screen TVs installed with a LED back light. This bit of cutting-edge technology is predictably expensive, but Samsung tried to make it available to a wider range of consumers—introduce a “cheap LED TV,” as it were. The company’s efforts yielded the 81F Series, Samsung’s first attempt at a mass-market model.

The competition intensified after Samsung launched the A950 series. Sony followed with the XBR9 series of LED HD TVs, and LG came out with the LG 47LG90. Both LG’s and Samsung’s 46” screen models sold at about $3000. For its part, Sony did not join in the price bracket set by LG and Samsung—the price of a 46” KDL-46XBR8 is $5000. At first glance, this makes it look like Sony’s models are way more expensive, but that’s just because of the differences in the LED back lighting technology used by the different manufacturers.

All three companies’ products contain hundreds of LEDs behind the LCD screen, but Sony takes a step up because it uses tri-color LED, whereas LG and Samsung use white LED.

LED Version

Sony dubs its tri-color LED system as “Sony Triluminous Technology,” and the three components consist of one blue LED and two green LEDs. Sony explains how its technology vastly improves the image quality, and perhaps this reason contributes to why they have a heftier price tag.

So for those who want to buy LED TVs, which one is better? Is it Sony’s tri-color LED, or Samsung’s white LED? Take into consideration that HDTV LED technology is still considered new, and there’s much room for improvement in later years. That doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s not the right time for you to purchase a LED TV; but if you think it through, it might be more practical to get a more affordable model now and splurge on an improved version much later.

LED CONS

• LED TVs with local dimming use more energy than traditional LCDs. It’s not much, about 100W for a particular size range.
• LED Televisions with discreet backlighting can have lots of dimensional depth to the cabinet. We recently reviewed one with a 6″ depth to the cabinet – making it less wall mount friendly.

LCD PROS

• LCD technology uses flat panel to offer clear display in televisions.
• LCD technology does not suffer by light output degrades due to phosphor wear, with time to time.
• As the length of tunnel has been shortening greatly, LCD displays are much better at an angle.
• Its displays have become the reference for personal computing.

LCD CONS

• LCD technology has not grown in the screen size like plasma. The largest measurement of LCD television is only 50 inches.
• The manufacturing cost of LCD is somewhat high.
• LCD technology has very high response delay. This delay may cause fast motion to blur.
• LCD televisions are more expensive.

It all depends on what you require of a good LED TV. If money is no object and you feel that Sony’s Triluminous technology has the edge you’re seeking, go for it. But if you think that the extra $2000 could go a long way for something else, get the Samsung model. It is still a Samsung product, after all; it’s bound to be of high quality, tri-color LED or not.

If you want to attach the TV to the base, you have to use 4 screws that the manufacturer sometimes doesn’t put in the package with the TV. A slight nuisance, indeed.
Get some great HDMI cables and you can turn the LG 32ld350 into a great contender for your living room configuration.

Many users are still unfamiliar with 3D technology, and just want to view their favorite show in the best 2D picture they can find. If you compare this Sony LED TV with a Samsung 8000 or LG W6500, you’ll find many things to like in all these models. The Samsung picture is outstanding. When viewed at a slight angle, you’ll find that the color saturation will drop, and also the blacks. The LG model keeps the colors better, plus with the lower price and Passive 3D feature you might be tempted to take it.

But many experienced users will choose to wait for the Sony LED TV. That’s because they don’t want to kick themselves later once they make comparisons. And once you put the Sony BRAVIA XBR55HX929 side by side with the other 2 models you’ll find that there’s really no comparison. Even casual users comment on how much brighter and livelier the overall picture is on the Sony LED TV. Even when viewing at a steep angle the Sony TV loses much less color than either the Samsung or LG.

If you view the picture from 30 feet away the vast difference in depth and clarity jumps out at you in full array. There’s virtually no blurring and the picture looks phenomenal. The Sony BRAVIA XBR55HX929 Gorilla glass is practical as well. You just need a good clean rag and some glass cleaner to make it beautiful. It’s pretty sturdy glass too.

The only things you may find a bit frustrating are the directions. You need to figure things out to place the settings you want. The internet side of this Sony LED TV is a bit slow too. The stand has a good design but sags a little bit. Finally, it costs a lot more than the LG model… about a thousand bucks more. For some, the picture quality makes the Sony BRAVIA XBR55HX929 worth it. For others it may not. And if you compare them side by side and decide to sign the check – you’ll agree it’s worth it.

A Close Look At the Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700

This Sony LED TV review is from someone who promised to return his new Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700 – if he doesn’t find a large enough difference in picture quality with his old LCD 50” 1080i TV. A new lamp was just installed in the old TV, so it makes sense to return the new one if HD quality is the same. Well, after a few weeks the old LCD TV is down in the basement waiting for someone to turn it on.

If you place the Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700 side by side with the old LCD 50” 1080i TV, and watch a DVD movie on both at the same time, you’ll immediately notice the brighter, more vivid images on the Sony LED TV. The clincher would be throwing in a Blue Ray – that’s the time your Sony HD blows away your old LCD TV. The difference in picture quality is enough to say, “Wow that really looks great!” You’ll get the same result if you download a 1080p movie.

There are two minor features you may not like. Two of the four HDMI cable connections are on the side (the other two are at the back, where they should be). It’s no big deal but if you’ve got HDMI cables hooked up to your blue ray player, cable box, and video game console, then one of those connections will be sticking out on the side all the time. You can bend the cable a little so it won’t stick out too much, but it’s a bit annoying if you want all of them hidden. The other minor detail is the stand. You’d think the company would have come up with something a little more elegant to blend with the rest of this Sony LED TV.

Someone asked how much energy the Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700 used. You may be surprised that this LED TV uses only an average of 75 watts when turned on. The old LCD projection TV used about 195 watts when it’s on – that’s a pretty big difference. 

There’s just one more thing. When watching HD pictures on the Sony Bravia KDL-52EX700, make sure you’re connected to a good HD channel because this Sony LED really brings out the difference between a good and bad HD channel.

You may think after spending almost $3000 on a Sony BRAVIA XBR55HX929, it may be a little hard to be still impressed by this Sony 55 LED – but this HD TV can still impress you as much as the first time you fire it up. A lot of people were on the verge of purchasing a new Samsung or LG 3D TV since Dec. 2010, for a sweet price at Amazon. But those who waited for this Sony LED TV were fortunate, because it’s impossible to get a true sense of what a TV can do until you run your own content on it. So it’s a good move to take a chance on the Sony flagship to trounce the competition enough to defend the price tag.

One of the first things you should do on a Sony BRAVIA XBR55HX929, after making your general start-up settings, is to throw on the 3D-blu ray DVD Legend of the Guardians. For many, this is the best 3D and movie experience they have had. The film may have its flaws, but the fluidity of its 3D motion and its level of detail is breathtaking to see! It’s the one movie you can use to show off to your buddies on what your Sony LED TV is capable of.

With an incredibly slim 0.2-inch framed border the LED 8000 series lets you get a bigger TV in a smaller space.

You may have noticed that the first generation of Samsung 3D TV’s have a good bit of ghosting. It’s something that the present generation of Samsung 3D TVs have not fixed either – but this is almost completely nonexistent on this Sony BRAVIA XBR55HX929. Blooming may have been an issue with past Sony LED models, but you won’t experience this with this current Sony Bravia even if you view it from off angles.

Another drawback before that’s been laid to rest was the delay in response during video games. Killzone 3, Crisis 2, and Gran Turismo 5 all look absolutely stunning now, and there’s no blurring or noticeable delay even when playing outside game mode. You can spend a few hours adjusting the display settings from CNET or other owners, but most find that the ‘Vivid’ and ‘Standard’ preset settings are best. As far as picture quality goes, this Sony HD is leaps better than the old Samsung plasma of 2 years ago – and it still offers better clarity and deeper blacks than the rest of its 2011 LED competition.

However, one can’t vouch for this Sony TV’s built-in sound since its underwhelming, like most TVs, or its Internet features and widgets either. But your PS3 can probably run all that the Sony 55 LED can offer on this area, with an easy to navigate XMB. Still, anyone willing to invest this much on a home theatre system should pick up a Pioneer VSX-1020-K sound system, or a similar decent sound system.

Overall, if you want the absolute best in 3D/HD TV pure picture quality and you’re less concerned about the checkout price, and then the Sony BRAVIA XBR55HX929 is the best that manufacturers have to offer.

The latest of Sony’s high-end LCD TVs is the Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1, a clear winner in the LCD picture quality department. Looks-wise, the Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1 is one of the most distinctive-looking TVs we’ve ever reviewed: the usual black border dressed up with silver trim along the front, the indicator lights strategically and inconspicuously placed below the right side of the screen so as not to distract your TV viewing experience. The remote isn’t backlit, and a Wega Gate button replaces the universal Menu, but otherwise the system menu is just like any other manufacturer’s. One major exception is how to control CineMotion (Sony’s term for 2:3 pull-down), which is now found in the Setup menu instead of the Picture menu.

Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1

Talking about picture quality, the Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1 has a native resolution of 1366 x 768, giving it enough pixels to render all of the detail of a 720p HDTV. There’s one NTSC tuner for standard-definition TV, and the ATSC tuner delivers HDTV. With the QAM tuner as well as the Digital Cable Ready compatibility, you can enjoy digital and HD cable without using an external cable box. The overall picture quality of the Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1 is quite promising – setting the backlight control to zero and adjusting the Picture (Contrast) and Brightness controls properly rewards you with a surprisingly convincing deep black color at a level you wouldn’t expect of an LCD TV panel, most noticeable when viewing dark scenes.

Of all the convenience features of the Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1, picture-in-picture is at the top of the list, with independent input memories following at a close second. For the aspect ratio, options included are Normal, Full, Zoom, and Wide Zoom, all working with both standard and high-definition sources. Like other TVs, there is a convenient Freeze feature that allows you to snap screen shots when needed.

Points are subtracted for the Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1’s connectivity feature, as it only has one HDMI input instead of the 2 ports most HDTVs at its price range have. Among its other compatibility features, the USB port is of note, allowing you to connect a Sony camera to view videos or photos onscreen.

Straight from the box, the Cinema picture presets gives the Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1 an obvious red cast, with other presets giving off a blue cast. Twiddling the calibrations a bit can greatly improve the color temperature, leading the picture quality closer to the 6500K standard. Color decoding is definitely Sony’s biggest weakness. Even with calibration, we couldn’t get rid of a nasty red push that caused, say, Caucasian skin tones to appear too red onscreen. The accurate red and blue primaries are a consolation, to say the least. Despite the drawbacks, detail in HD sources appeared fantastic, with the TV acing the 720p multiburst resolution pattern set by our Sencore VP403 signal generator.

Overall, the Sony Bravia KDL-V40XBR1 is still lacking in home theater quality compared to the best plasmas, but it puts on a pretty face that delivers quite an impressive picture for an LCD TV.
